New Book from Robert Montgomery

Bucks Falcon Mercury

In Why We Fish, Robert Montgomery examines the reasons we keep going back to the water and how fishing enriches us, both individually and as a society. Contributed by ten passionate anglers, the essays on these pages celebrate the tangible and intangible blessings we derive from one of man’s oldest pastimes.

What is life all about? Go fishing and find out. But first, enjoy the wonderful essays in Why We Fish.

Robert discovered that we fish to remember, and we fish to forget. We fish when we’re happy, and when we’re sad. We fish to bond with friends and family, or to be alone. Whatever our motivation, no matter where we are on the success spectrum, fishing makes our lives better in ways we never could have imagined. It slows us down. It sets us free. It teaches us about nature, even while showing us how much we don’t know. And fishing becomes the foundation for our fondest memories.

A note from Robert

“Many men go fishing their entire lives without knowing it is not fish they are after” — Henry David Thoreau

What is fishing all about? With a little help from my fishing friends, including Bill Dance, I decided to answer that question in this book.

Whatever our motivation, no matter where we are on the success spectrum, fishing makes our lives better in ways we never could have imagined. It slows us down. It sets us free. It teaches us about nature, even as it reveals how much we don’t know. And fishing is the foundation for many of our fondest memories.

This book examines the reasons we keep going back to the water and how that experience enriches us, both individually and as a society. The essays on these pages celebrate both the tangible and intangible blessings we derive from a pastime enjoyed by nearly 60 million Americans. (That many people say they’ve gone fishing within the past five years and consider themselves anglers. About 40 million buy fishing licenses annually.)

Some of these essays deal directly with why we fish in a world more complicated than Thoreau’s. Others not so much. But they all are interconnected in the big picture of why we fish.

Author’s note: I wrote most of the essays, but I didn’t want my voice to be the only one in this book. That’s why I asked nine others to contribute. They all share my passion for angling, and I’m proud to call them friends. I know you’ll enjoy reading their insights into why we fish.

About the Author

Robert U. Montgomery has been hooked on fishing since he first tried the sport during a Cub Scout outing. A degree in journalism from the University of Missouri helped him turn his passion into a career as a fishing writer.

He is author of Better Bass Fishing (Countryman Press) and founder of Activist Angler, a website devoted to promoting and protecting recreational fishing. He is a long-time Senior Writer specializing in conservation for B.A.S.S. Publications, and a contributing writer for Fishing Tackle Retailer Magazine.

In addition, the Missouri native is a winner of the prestigious Homer Circle Fishing Communicator Award. He serves on the Board of Directors of Recycled Fish, a national conservation organization, and on the Conservation Pro Staff of Vanishing Paradise, a National Wildlife Federation initiative to restore Louisiana’s fish and waterfowl habitat by reconnecting the Mississippi River to the state’s wetlands.

Robert has fished in Africa, South America, Central America, and throughout much of North America. He enjoys catching bluegill and crappie just as much as tarpon and sailfish. Well . . . nearly as much.

He has caught-and released-more than a dozen 10-pound largemouth bass. Montgomery lives on a small lake in the eastern Ozarks with his dog Pippa.
