Dave Lefebre – On the Road Again

Power Pole

LefebreBlogWe had a nice 2-week break and Memorial Day weekend, but I think we were all anxious to hit the road again to Kentucky and get back to the camper. Anne is driving right now in the pouring down rain while I get caught up on things and check the weather and water levels at Kentucky Lake. It’s nice to all be in the Suburban together again. We left the Diesel and fifth wheel at FLW headquarters on the way home from Beaver Lake last month. Looks like we’ll be having some abnormally low water for this event and that weights may be a tad lower too, but you never know in a fish factory like Kentucky.

Last week was pretty uneventful for the most part. I went out on the Bay one day testing rods and new Rapala DT baits. I got some new Custom Ink colors in and can’t wait to put them to use. It was fun to crank again; I used to do it all the time, but kind of got away from it after I turned pro. The Tour generally fishes around the spawn and is usually wrapping up the season when cranking is just starting to get hot, I miss fishing that way.

I don’t know what I ever did without Dobyns Rods, his cranking rods are the best I’ve ever used. I have always used fiberglass (St Criox) rods and never dreamed I could be happy with a composite blank for crankbaits, but that has changed big time. I still haven’t settled completely on which one I like best for the big DT 16 and 20’s, one day it’s the 765 CB and the next it’s the 804. I’ve always used 8 footers so I think I’m leaning toward the 804 now…they are both great sticks though. If you like a 7 footer, I was surprised to learn that the 705 CB Glass I use for the smaller stuff can also handle those big deep divers just as well with no problem.

Well it is going to be a busy week in Kentucky. I’ve actually been looking forward to going back since I struggled there last year on day two, it was painful. I caught like 100 fish a day though, lol, it is a fun place for a derby.

Talk to you all next week during practice sometime!
